I had quite possibly the most surreal 24 hours recently. My team left our current camp in Mississippi for a day to head to New Orleans. When we arrived, we were on Anderson Cooper 360. According to both my mother and Aunt Suzie, I appeared like a floating head behind Anderson for a few minutes. The next day, my team worked with NBA Cares and Hands On NOLA to lay down grass for a elementary school football field and put up basketball hoops. I was one of two Co-leads for the football operation, and at one point during the work, a staff member came over and said, “Geoff, this is Jet Li. He’s going to be helping out. Can you show him around?” I had no problem showing Jet Li, a famous action move star, how to lay sod. Later, the staff member came to me and said “Geoff, this is Will Smith of the New Orleans Saints. He’s going to be helping out. Can you show him around?” Again, no problem. A few minutes later, the staff member comes again and says “Geoff, this is Rasheed Wallace. Can you show him around?” Rasheed learned fast. A fourth time, the staff member comes by and says “Geoff, this is Yao Ming. Can you show him what to do?” I now have Yao Ming, Rasheed Wallace, Jet Li, and Will Smith, along with 30 other volunteers, coming to me and asking me questions about landscaping. It was a great day and we got all of our work done. The kids now have a place to play football as well as a newly painted downstairs hallway.
Lesson to learn from this post: NBA players have the unique ability to be freakishly tall and carry patches of grass. Not a common combination.
this is an awesome story.
